The Rev. Deacon Dr. Don M.R. Aanavi, 72, of Ninole died July 22 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in New York City, he was a retired professor of art with the University of Hawaii at Hilo, campus minister, curator of the Laurance Rockefeller Collection of Asian and Oceanic Art at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, author of “The Art of Mauna Kea,” and deacon of the Roman Catholic Church at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo. Friends may call from 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Casual attire. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Hilo in memory of the Rev. Dr. Aanavi. Survived by son, Michael Aanavi of Mill Valley, Calif. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Judith May Edwards, 91, of Keauhou died Aug. 4 at the Life Care Center of Kona. She was an active Jehovah’s Witness and a homemaker. Private services held. Survived by daughter, Vivian (Joe) Murphy of Waddell, Ariz.; sons, Douglas (Suzanna) Edwards of Seattle, Wash., Richard (Linda) Edwards of Orange County, Calif., and Arthur (Suzan) Edwards of Kailua-Kona; six grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John Francis Flynn, 61, of Kapaau died Aug. 1 at home. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a metalsmith, jewelry designer and owner of Elements Jewelry & Fine Crafts in Hawi. Private services held. Richard Y. Segawa, 84, of Gardena, Calif., died July 5 at Sunnyside Skilled Nursing Hospital in Torrance, Calif. Born in Hilo, he was retired as deputy engineer at Glendale County, Calif., played on the the Hilo High School Vikings championship basketball teams of 1944-46, and was a U.S. Army veteran. Services held. Survived by brother, Herbert (Kay) Segawa; sister, Dr. Lillian (Justin) Ekuan of Dana Point, Calif., three children, a grandson, an aunt, several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Benjamin “Uncle Ben” Torres, 76, of Mountain View died Aug. 2 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired mason. Private service.
